Why was there a... kettle... in the middle of the forest? A kettle with a grate on it? How long had THAT been there? It was very quiet in the clearing around the kettle. But then came a gurgling sound... A viscous liquid started to ooze through the grate, bubbling up like a backed up pipe. A white ooze filled up the kettle, until a shape burst out from it. It was... a squid? A greenish squid. And once it landed on the ground, it changed shape. Into a girl with white tentacles for hair, carrying what looked like a sniper rifle. But that wasn't the end of it. 

There came another squid. 

And then another. 

In no time flat, three half-human half-squid girls were there, each armed to the teeth. 

"I think we missed the target," the white squid said to the group, shouldering her rifle.

[Aaah, shoot. Her first real mission with her senior agents and the target slipped off. Good going, Thida, real smart. She cocks her Hero Shot, the weapon still a bit bulky in her hands after having used an Inkbrush for so long.]

Coulda swam fast? Got out 'n his?

[agent2]

I dunno... This doesn't look anything LIKE Octo Valley, or Inkopolis.

[agent1]

[ AND FROM BEHIND ]

That's the last time we let Agent 2 drive!

[agent3]

[Theeere she is. Thida points to herself.]

Can't drive, though!

[agent2]

[Marie nodded at Thida, and without missing a beat, added on.]

And YOU don't have your license, Agent 1.

[agent3]

...We went too far?

[How long were they swimming anyway? Thida frowns, trying to see if her internal clock can come up with an estimate.]

[agent2]

I didn't think so... This FELT like the right distance. It's like the kettle network destination got swapped.

[agent3]

[...Going to just give you a blank stare.]

But...kettles're in the ground...

[You can't rip out an entire kettle system and replace it with something else that just doesn't happen]

[agent2]

Maybe the Octarians found some way to change it. They had some weird weapons in Octo Valley, after all... This is just really weird, either way. We should head back where we came from.

[agent3]

'Kay.

[Thida shifts, but she doesn't go down into the kettle just yet. The senpais should go first, after all.]

Running security with the others could be pretty boring work. As far as Billy knew, this island was pretty deserted other than the creatures that roamed around and those were easy enough to handle. But, you know what they say, better safe than sorry. So he never rejected whenever they assigned him patrol duty, besides, it was nice to have a walk around.

Today seemed like it'd be the same skit until he happened upon the gurgling grate and the sudden appearance of armed folks. Well, didn't take the trained Marine to unholster his large weapon and point it at the group of... girls? What even...

Whatever the case they were armed and he needed to make sure they weren't hostiles so there was currently a handcannon aimed at the spot. "State your business ladies, tell me you're not here to cause trouble yeah?"

Marie heard movement in the brush before Billy even spoke up. As a Charger main, she knew all about being aware of her surroundings, so she wasn't caught unaware. She didn't recognize the weaopn being leveled at them, but she had a splat bomb palmed and hidden from view.

"We're just looking for someone, none of your business," Marie said simply.

Down to business, he can get behind that. "Considering you just barged into private property, I'd say it's very much my business." His eyes narrowed as he gauged the situation. All things considered, he's been in much worse.

Bloop blop gorp

The noise gained Rene's attention, and she set down her basket of fruits from the forest to investigate. Was there a sudden hidden spring? She was sure there hadn't been anything like that before...

Wait a second. Those were squids. Those were squids! But did they really look that oozing? She had only seen them out of the water, on dinner plates, and that was a rarity. She knew they had ink, and had had pasta with it, but it had always been black.

...they turned into people. The idea of a squid dinner went immediately out the window, and Rene mused as to how she was more surprised to see squids than she was to see them turn into people.

Marie could hear some rustling nearby. She stopped, lifting a hand for the other agents. "Someone's there," she said quietly to Callie and Thida. "Stay on your guard..."

[agent3]

[Thida perks up at the rustling herself, but she keeps her mouth shut, eyes slowly surveying for the source and hands tight on the Hero Shot. Yep, this is definitely one squid on guard.]

She'd been spotted. A year of field combat had taught Rene some signs, but these sure didn't seem like they'd be the sort to attack on sight. So she did something she'd never do on the battlefield.

She approached. "Hey, it's ok. I was just out here looking for some fruit. Do you want any?"

[agent2]

[...Okay, this wasn't a threat. Marie lowered her Charger slowly.]

We're cool. Have you seen an octopus coming this way? We're kinda in a hurry here.

[agent3]

[If Marie's lowering her weapon, so will Thida, albeit hesitantly. She isn't exactly sure what kind of being she's looking at, after all.]

Gotta stop 'um.

[garmentgoddess]

"Stop...octopus..es?" Rene pondered this for a moment. "I haven't seen any. Do they turn into people too?"

[agent2]

Duh, what else would they turn into?

Long as you're here though, where exactly is here?

[agent3]

[Adds,] Far from Inkopolis?

[Because obviously it seems like they're a far, far way from home.]

Rene thought about that. It wasn't any city she had any sort of experience with. "I don't think I've ever heard anyone mention it. But I can take you to some people who might know."

[agent2]

Marie listened, and her face soured the more Rene spoke. This wasn't right at all. How could the kettles have brought them here, face to face with creatures who were supposed to be extinct? "Something's definitely off... We should abort," she mused to her fellow squid kids.

[agent3]

[Abort? Thida scrunches her face up and shakes her head.]

Th' Octoling, though! Might be here still, right? [She gestures to the human.] Can they fight 'em?

[garmentgoddess]

"Uh?" Rene asked, as much of a question as that was. "Octoling?"

[agent2]

Marie glanced back up at the human with a raised eyebrow. She had to remind herself that she wasn't familiar with Inklings and Octolings... Didn't mean she didn't have to act a little testy about it. "Octolings are like us Inklings, except they're octopi, not squids."
