Rene hung the last of the party decorations over the door and quickly put the ladder away. The tables were set with various edibles, the curtains were crisp and ironed, the paper decorations were festive and cute, and the year was about to change.

2017 though? What a strange number. She wondered what their calendar was based on. No matter, a celebration was always a good time.

"I'm surprised," he said with a small chuckle. "But I do hope I'm not too forward. I simply mean to be polite. I hail from the land of Azeroth. I've learned that Tauren are a fairly unique race to Azeroth, so it's not surprising you haven't heard of us before."

"I've never heard of that place. But you've probably never heard of Gallia, right?"

"I can't say that I have," he answered. "So it would seem we could both stand to learn more about each other's homelands."

[garmentgoddess]

"Well, no time like the present, right? Here, I'll start with this." She held out her hand, to the side now. "In Gallia, we shake hands as a greeting. Some people kiss cheeks, but I'm from out in the country."

Ujarak chuckled in response, extending his hand to shake. "Of course. We do that in Azeroth as well," he replied, shaking her hand. "I simply wanted to be a gentleman in the presence of a lovely lady."

Oh boy, Rene wasn't used to that. Flirting had never been in Rene's wheelhouse, either doing or receiving it. Was she supposed to flirt back? Was she supposed to disregard it? Instead she just giggled. "Hahahaha, so how did you come here? I was supposed to have a job at the school, but when I got here, there wasn't a school any more."

Get used to it. Ujarak can't turn the charm off. But he was taking everything in stride, enjoying her reactions all the same. "I'm not entirely certain," he replied. "I wander so often, but one morning I woke up and the forest was... different. The sky and the stars were different, and I realized I was no longer in Azeroth. I had been brought here." He smiled. "So, you are a teacher?"

"I was gonna be. Home economics. Gonna teach everyone to clean and cook and sew and all of that. I mean, I'm not the best cook, but I know enough to teach the basics..." She shook her head. "I've been helping clean this place up. It was all greasy when I first got here. You'd never know it now though!"

"Indeed not," Ujarak replied with a nod. "It's a very comfortable place, to be sure," he explained, "although given how I have lived my life, my preferences skew towards living in nature. But you have a noble mission. There are many skills that can be so easily taken for granted until you have to do them for yourself."

"Well, you still have to know how to cook and sew if you live outside, right?" She grinned. "I can teach you how to use a sewing machine if you want, though."

He laughed quietly. "A sewing machine, hm? I've always found sewing by hand has been enough for my needs. But if you'd like, I wouldn't mind learning a new skill," he answered.

[garmentgoddess]

"The basics are always good to know. But a machine can get things done a lot faster, and they're easier on your knuckles." She flexed her fingers. "Mending is usually best by hand though."

"Mending has been more or less all I've really required in the past," he explained. "When one travels as much as I do, one needs to take care of the clothing they do have."

"I guess it works at parties, huh?" she commented with a flip of her hand. "Where do you travel?"

[wildtrail]

"Yes, I suppose it does," he chuckled. "I travel anywhere and everywhere my journeys take me. I have no home, and prefer to live in nature. I find it very calming and peaceful..."

"That means that's your home, doesn't it?" Rene knew she could never do that, but Vicky made it seem so nice.

[wildtrail]

"Very insightful," Ujarak replied with a laugh. "I suppose that does make the wilds my home. I care for nature, and nature cares for me. That is the way of the Druid."

[garmentgoddess]

"Oh, you're a Druid? That's funny. Where I'm from, Druids are human." She didn't know much about them, only that they came from a northern country, but "Everyone's human where I'm from."

"It certainly sounds somewhat dull to not have the kind of diversity I'm accustomed to," Ujarak chuckled in response.

"We make do," she grinned. "Humans are still pretty diverse I guess. In our own ways."

[wildtrail]

"As are Tauren," he added. "As are all of the races of Azeroth. Diversity is strength."

[garmentgoddess]

"You know, it is. My best friend Magari is a Darscen, and a lot of people hate them." Rene's good mood soured quickly. "Something supposedly happened with them a few thousand years ago, so they get blamed for a lot of bad things. But even if it did happen, there's no one alive now who was responsible for it! And it's still used as an excuse to discriminate against them and...and worse..." She had done her best to shield Magari from seeing the worst of it, but in wartime there was only so much she could do.

"Many find it difficult to let go of the past," Ujarak said simply. "But as the saying goes, those who do not learn from the past are doomed to repeat it. Holding on to old grudges and hatred does nobody any favours. I feel sorry for those who cannot learn those lessons..."

Magari's treatment in society was one of the few things that truly upset Rene, and she sniffled a bit. "Sorry. It gets to me."

"I understand," he replied. He took Rene's hand and kissed it. "I did not intend to upset you. Please, allow me to make it up to you in any way I can," Ujarak offered.
