Ah, the political process! The prior attempt at enforcing some sort of order had been more than a little bit of a failure, but not an entire one. It had given Cyrus notice of what to watch out for, such as voter fraud.

ESPECIALLY voter fraud. He would have to put more into inspiring people, even if another would be the leader. Unless it was Eggman.

Signs around the building had advertised the event, and encouraged people to attend and run for a leadership position themselves, so he was hoping (what an odd feeling that was) more would do so.

Eggman came prepared to dominate. He was wearing a blue suit, and... W-was that a wig? He took to the podium, and it began...

"My distinguished colleague would have you believe we're living in a time of FAIRY TALES and KUMBAYA, but I'm here to tell you that we're not safe as long as we're still tolerating THREATS FROM WITHIN. I speak of course... about ANNOYING ANTHROPOMORPHIC WOODLAND CREATURES."

"They're here destroying the very fabric of our being. WHEN ANTHROPOMORPHIC ANIMALS COME INTO THIS MANSION, THEY AREN'T BRINGING THEIR BEST. THEY'RE BRINGING IN THEIR ROBOT DESTROYERS, THEIR ANIMAL SAVERS, THEIR PLOT RUINERS, AND SOME, I IMAGINE, ARE GOOD PEOPLE. But let me tell you... I'm very smart. I've got words, I have the best words, and I'm a great businessman. I've run THREE evil theme parks. How many has my opponent here run? That's right, none."

"I don't believe in destroying the world and rebuilding it from scratch, I believe we can MAKE THIS MANSION GREAT AGAIN."

Cyrus smirked, not out of mirth but as a learned action to appear normal. What it truly represented was utter fury. "My opponent proposes that I believe the world to be idyllic. Yet nothing in my words or actions would suggest such a thing. His accusations are drawn from nothing, both against me and against this...manufactured threat. He presents no facts, no explanations, and willfully describes himself as evil. I ask you all to take that into account. Do not be swayed by pomp, and do not mistake bombast for true reason."

"Well, MY opponent seems to believe if we blindly follow him, he WON'T try to destroy all of reality on us," Eggman retorted, adjusting that... We can only hope it's a wig. "Now me, I'm here with practical solutions. If I'm elected, I'm gonna build a wall around the mansion to keep all of those fuzzballs out. And that Sonic is gonna pay for it out of the rings I knock out of his unconscious body!"

"Ah, a vendetta against a single person." Cyrus folded his arms in what could be described as a sarcastic position. "A wall to divide...how do you believe that will advance us?"

"Just what I'd expect from someone with NO leadership experience, who hasn't even run a city let alone an entire COUNTRY," Eggman retorted without missing a beat. "I've got experience, I've got the best temperament, I'm really rich, I think I know what's best for our mansion."

"Oh? Surely the first and last are true, as in you believe you know what is best...but do you truly know? You cite your wealth as a votable trait, yet all that money is worthless in this place. The ruler we require would have taken note of that. Regardless, your personal wealth has no bearing on your capacity to rule. We do not wish to build a plutocracy."

Cyrus was about ready to throw down, debate-wise.

If Vivian were't my daughter I'd-- No, even I can't go that far.

"Just the talk I'd expect to her from a dirty liberal," he replied. "I bet you're not even tough on crime."

Well yes that's because Eggman still has some standards yet

Considering Cyrus's idea on how to solve things like crime was to hard reset the universe...no, he couldn't bring that up because it was already being used against him.

Of course, there was still plenty to use against his opponent.

"My record in keeping order speaks for itself. Although your record...I believe you have manufactured weapons to use against peaceful citizens. Is this correct?"

WAS THAT A CRACK AT EGGMAN'S PERFECT ROBOT DAUGHTER. If not carry on, he won't disintegrate you yet.

"I also saved the city from an invasion of shadow clones with that army of robots you so carelessly dismiss. I'm running on a platform of MORE ROBOTS FOR MORE SECURITY."

Cyrus ever so slightly chuckled, another learned quirk. "You did not answer my question."

"Sure I did! But MY weapons have actually SAVED US ALL! And what about YOURS? How's that RED CHAIN going?"

Ah, a diversion. Very well. "Had you kept abreast of the changes around you, you would have known that I have since realized that it would accomplish nothing. Yet, you hide behind the idea that you've 'saved us all' while still admitting that you have attacked innocent civilians. I wonder...do you believe those who bore the brunt of that violence would agree with you?"

"Just as I thought!" Eggman retorted, pointing a finger at Cyrus dramatically. "You got no GUMPTION! Can't even finish ONE scheme for world domination! Now I ask you, what kind of leader is that, who never finishes what he sets out to do?!" he asked, conveniently ignoring Cyrus's question altogether.

"I have never aimed for world domination. My goal was to free us all from the grip of hatred and violence. I confess now, I realize that I had gone too far in that goal. I still believe in the ultimate aim, but now I see with unclouded mind that there are other ways to achieve it." Cyrus smiled, still uncomfortable on his face.

"You did not answer my question. Do you believe those civilians targeted with your weapons would agree that you were, as you claim, keeping the peace?"

"If they were INNOCENT, they WOULDN'T HAVE RESISTED. They were either WITH ME, or WITH SETH."

"Fascinating. So silence equals guilt to you." He began to pace. "While complacency brings about ills in the world, as it permits them to happen, I do question your summation. You are, of course, aware that your faction was not the only one fighting against that threat. Surely you cannot consider a resistance force to be siding with their enemy simply because they are not allied with you, personally."

"Why not?"

A few months ago, Cyrus wouldn't have thought it possible to think such things. The words still sounded alien to him, even though he had formed his own 'third side'. "Surely you can see how there can be more than two sides. Opposition to an oppressive force takes many forms, and those who abhor your methods still fight tyranny. To claim that they are no different than their enemies simply because they do not side with you is abhorrent."

The former Galactic Boss in him was lost in thought, though he spoke as clearly and as crisply as he had then.

"It's actually quite simple! There's MY side, and there's the WRONG side!" Eggman replied. "Can't get much clearer than that!"

On the other hand, Cyrus had, even at his most extreme, seen merit in some of his enemies.

"Those who dedicate themselves to overcoming the same opponents you do, you believe they are sided with said opponents simply because they are not with you. I see..." He looked around "I ask you all if you concur with this conclusion."
